When should I call hospice?We encourage you to call hospice as soon as you change your focus from cure to comfort. We can help you organize your life, draw upon available resources and prepare you for what’s ahead, as well as provide relief from pain and other symptoms. Getting hospice involved early may give you more quality time with loved ones.Is hospice only for cancer patients?Hospice is available to all patients with a terminal illness. While many have cancer, others suffer from diseases such as ALS, HIV, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and others.Who pays for hospice?Hospice generally is covered by Medicare, Medical Assistance, HMOs and other managed care and private insurance plans. Thanks to the generosity of grateful family members and community donors, Lehigh Valley Hospice is able to care for eligible patients regardless of their ability to pay.What if I need help after hours?Your needs are our top priority. Our nurses are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.Who provides hospice care?Our specially-educated interdisciplinary team of health professionals includes experienced hospice nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, therapists and volunteers. They work in partnership with you, your family and your physician to develop an individualized plan of care. This plan is based entirely on your needs and desires, guided by our experience in working with families in similar situations.If I choose hospice, will my physician still be involved in my care?Yes, but the focus will change from curing you to making you as comfortable as possible. You will receive whatever care is appropriate, including aggressive pain management and nursing care.Why are we qualified?Lehigh Valley Hospice is certified by Medicare, licensed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and accredited by the The Joint Commission.
